Declaration on Molecular Pathology

annual meeting June 8th, 2013, Madrid

European citizens are entitled to the highest standards of personalized medicine especially related to diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The current challenge is the rapidly expanding field of molecular Pathology. Molecular Pathology is defined as the analysis of diagnostic samples of human cells and tissues, using various molecular techniques, and the interpretation of the results so derived, particularly in the context of clinical and other morphological findings. Pathology (also known as histopathology, surgical pathology, anatomic pathology or cellular pathology including cytopathology) uses tissue and cellular samples, however obtained, to provide diagnostic, prognostic and predictive information in the form of an integrated pathology report including molecular Pathology. As Pathology is the specialty, that is best placed to maximise the use of tissue and cellular samples, molecular Pathology must be performed under the authority of and as part of the responsibility of the pathologist.
